The Government of Israel will not enter into formal armistice negotiations with other Arab states until the talks with Egypt at Rhodes have reached some conclusion, it was reliably learned here today.
Admitting for the first time the possibility that the Rhodes conference may not be successfully concluded, an official spokesman said that in either event–success or failure of the armistice negotiations–the Israeli Government would not be inclined to begin formal armistice talks with either Arab states until the talks with Egypt had ended.
Complete breakdown of the talks with Egypt would not, however, preclude the inception of formal negotiations with other Arab countries, it was emphasized.Direct contacts have been maintained by Israeli officials with both Lebanon and Trans Jordan, but they are dormant at present.
