Israel signed a deal to buy two more German submarines at a discount. Israeli security sources said Tuesday that under a recent agreement with Germany, two new Dolphin-class submarines will be received by the end of the decade for about $650 million. Facing cuts to its defense budget, Israel plans to pay for the submarines over 10 years. Israel currently has three Dolphins but wants to expand its fleet to counter long-range threats such as the Iranian nuclear program. According to security sources, the new Dolphins will be more advanced than those Israel currently has, and will be capable of submersion periods of a week or more.
