Israel today became the 28th nation to sign the U.N. convention on the prevention and punishment of the crime of genocide. Aubrey S. Eban, Israeli representative to the United Nations, who signed the convention, made the following statement:
“The signature of the genocide convention by Israel evokes the memory of the brutal slaughter of millions of Jews by Nazi regimes in Europe. Many peoples were afflicted by this massacre, but none lost a greater proportion of its sons than did the Jewish people.
“The United Nations, which defeated the Nazi tyranny, has in this convention expressed the revulsion of civilized mankind against the dread consequences of persecution and discrimination. Israel hereby reaffirms its most intimate concern for the protection and observance of human rights within the framework of the United Nations.”
