Israel Singer and Bobby Brown were fired Wednesday from their posts at the World Jewish Congress. Rabbi Singer, chairman of the WJC s policy council, and Brown, director of the organization s Israel branch, were fired by the organization s president Edgar Bronfman. Bronfman informed members of the organization s steering committee of the decision in a conference call Wednesday evening that was marred by allegations that several people opposed to the firings had their microphones cut off. The unexpected move is the latest twist in a longstanding dispute between the WJC and its Israel affiliate. WJC also has come under scrutiny for inadequate financial control mechanisms following disclosure of Singer s transfer of $1.2 million to a Swiss bank account.
