Israel stepped up security at its European diplomatic missions after Kurdish separatist leader Abdullah Ocalan was sentenced to death in Turkey. But expected violent demonstrations by Ocalan’s supporters failed to materialize. In February, three Kurdish demonstrators were shot dead by guards when they tried to storm the Israeli Consulate in Berlin. The protesters had been angered by news reports, vehemently denied by Israel, that Israeli intelligence officials had helped Turkey arrest Ocalan in Kenya.
