Yosef Tekoah, Israeli Ambassador to Brazil, came here from his mission’s headquarters at Rio de Janeiro to attend the ceremonies. The first Jewish community in the Western Hemisphere was formed here in the seventeenth century by Jews who emigrated to Recife from Amsterdam, Holland.
