Israel sent to the Security Council last night a second note of warning in 24 hours over the expanding scope of Syrian attacks on Israel’s border. Joel Barromi, Israel’s acting chief delegate, sent the letters to Jose Maria Ruda of Argentina, the January president of the Security Council. The second letter cited new tank attacks by Syria yesterday, reporting that two Syrian tanks were knocked out in one of the clashes.
The first letter listed 19 examples of Syrian “aggression” between December 10 and January 8 which Israel said were in “flagrant violation” of the Syrian-Israeli armistice agreements and “in defiance of a commitment for an unconditional cease-fire pledged by the Syrian Government” on June 9, 1966. The second letter noted that placement of tanks along the frontier was totally barred by the armistice agreement. Israel did not ask for a meeting of the Security Council on the new border violence.
