The Israel Supreme Court opened today a hearing on the appeal by Dr. Israel Beer from a 10-year prison term on conviction of espionage last January. The prosecution at the same time began an appeal against the sentence as too lenient.
The three-man tribunal, with Chief Justice Yitzhak Olshan presiding, met behind closed doors. City its judgment on the appeals will be made public. Before entering the courtroom, Dr. Beer, a former member of the Israel Army general staff, told newsmen he was innocent. He said he had never spied, betrayed or sent military secrets to any power, the counts on which he was convicted.
