Israel was seen here today as having won a very significant victory against persistent Arab efforts to isolate it politically, when it became known that Israel will be officially invited tomorrow to address a meeting of the “Group of 77.”
The group, made up of Latin American, Asian and African blocs, is the newest and largest aggregation of UN member states, interested primarily in advancing the needs of underdeveloped countries.
At last month’s meetings of the “Group of 77,” presided over by Amjad Ali, of Pakistan, Israel was denied the opportunity to press its contention that it belongs in the group. Ambassador Michael S. Comay, Israel’s permanent representative here, was shouted down by Arab delegates, while Mr. Ali sat silent, refusing to recognize Mr. Comay. Tomorrow’s meeting has been summoned by a new chairman, Francisco Cuevas Cancino, of Mexico.
In summoning the session, the Mexican notified all members including the Arabs-that he will “invite the representative of Israel to take part in the debate on the first item on the agenda.” That item concerns Israel’s contention that it rightfully belongs inside the “Group of 77.”
