Israel is taking steps to balance Soviet shipments of MIG17 jet fighters to Egypt and Syria which are superior to even the latest Mysteries acquired by the Jewish State, Shimon Peres, director general of the Defense Ministry, told a meeting of the Israel Foreign Press Association today. Mr. Peres said that among the measures planned is the production locally of munitions for the use of aircraft.
The Israeli official charged that the Egyptians were reconstructing military bases in the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip. Nevertheless, he reported that since the Sinai campaign, Israel has had its greatest period of quiet along the borders.
