Israel next year will be completely self-sufficient in protein foods and will halt all imports of fish, meat and diary foods except dried milk, Pinchas Sapir, Minister of Trade and Industry, told a press conference today. He said importation of dried milk would continue for some time.
He said Israel would save about $7,000,000 annually in foreign currency by ending imports of meat and fish. He also indicated that if the cessation of such imports sparks any temporary price increases for such foods, the Government will release meat and fish from its stock piles to the market to halt such boosts.
