The Israeli Ministry of Commerce today established a committee to expedite a series of industrial enterprises with joint Arab-Jewish capital in the latest Government-sponsored move to speed the integration of Israel’s Arab minority.
The committee was set up after a study of plans submitted by Arab and Government officials and the projects to be fostered include canning plants for fruits and vegetables and a textile factory in the Arab-populated Samaria district known as “The Little Triangle.”
These plans received a vigorous push after a meeting between Prime Minister David Ben Gurion and representatives of Israeli Arabs last month. In a follow-up to that meeting, Fares Hamdan, Arabian member of the Israel Parliament, discussed details of the project with Pinhas Saphir, Commerce Minister. The Government was expected to provide easy long-term loans to enable the project builders to capitalize such enterprises soundly.
