Israel will propose to citrus growing countries that they abstain from planting new citrus groves until new markets have been developed for absorption of increased crops, it was learned here today.
The proposal, it is understood, will be made at the conference of the Mediterranean Citrus Growers Association, to be convened in Italy next September 20, by Zvi Isaacson, chairman of the Israel Citrus Marketing Board. Mr. Isaacson is also, this year, president of the Mediterranean Association.
The Mediterranean area produced 3,500,000 tons of citrus fruits last year, but production by existing groves is increasing annually, and is expected to reach 5,500,000 tons by 1965.
