Secretary Dulles’ statement at his press conference yesterday, reiterating his 1955 stand that the United States’ good offices were available to both sides in the Arab-Israel conflict was welcomed today by a spokesman of the Foreign Office here.
The spokesman pointed out that Israel continues to favor direct negotiations between Israel and the Arab governments “and for this purpose the good offices of the United States are certainly welcome.” He noted that Mr. Dulles’ remarks indicated that he did not expect progress toward a peace settlement in the near future. Actually, the Israeli continued, in recent weeks all Arab radio stations have been viewing with each other in virulent threats to destroy Israel.
