Israeli Ambassador Eliahu Elath last night declared that Israel would not accept more than 100,000 Arab refugees. In response to questions by newsmen, Mr. Elath said that “we believe that we went to every possible end and could not do more without sacrificing the very economic and military security of our country.”
It was reported here today that the United States has decided to warn the Arabs and the Israelis that unless they get together on a settlement of the Arab refugee issue this government will not continue to underwrite the relief program for the refugees. If a constructive plan is agreed upon, the report added, the U.S. Government will ask the United Nations and Congress for additional funds for the program.
