An Israeli Army unit penetrated more than half a mile into Jordanian territory early this morning destroying the Taibeh defense post in the Beisan Valley, situated two miles southeast of the Israeli town of Yardena. One Israeli soldier was killed and eight were wounded. Enemy losses were said to be four dead. An Israeli military spokesman said the Taibeh outpost has been increasingly cooperative with Jordanian terrorists, aiding them in raids on civilian settlements. The Israelis captured some light arms and withdrew under mortar fire. The dead Israeli soldier was Second Lieut. Mordecai Lerner, 24, of Herzlia. Another four Arab guerrillas were killed by an Israeli patrol Sunday night in the Arava desert region near Timna, north of Eilat. They had fired Katyusha rockets into the area.
Israeli spokesmen denied a Cairo claim today that Egyptian commandos, in their first strike across the Suez Canal in more than a month, raided the Israeli-occupied Sinai Peninsula and inflicted “great loss of life.” (Cairo also reported that 36 Israeli planes struck Egyptian missile sites along the canal today, hitting Suez, El-Shatt, Fayed, El-Hirsh and El-Cap in the northern and southern sectors, with no Egyptian casualties.) (In Beirut, a Lebanest military spokesman said two Israeli half-trucks crossed the cease-fire line and bore off an injured Lebanese woman while retreating under Lebanese fire. The spokesman said the Israeli patrol reached half a mile into Lebanese territory.)
