Israeli authorities raided a radio station working to encourage coexistence with the Palestinians.

RAM FM was temporarily shut down this week when Israeli police raided its Jerusalem station, placing seven employees under house arrest.

Authorities said RAM FM, which receives South African funding and has another broadcasting center in the Palestinian Authority city of Ramallah, was operating without a license.

Pirate radio stations are a major problem for Israel, officials say, by often infringing on military frequencies and disrupting communications with civilian aircraft.

Sponsors of RAM FM suggested that Israeli authorities took action because they disagreed with its political stand.
