Israeli forces have been placed on a high alert on both the Egyptian and Syrian fronts following the collapse of second-stage talks with Egypt, it was learned today. According to reliable sources, Israeli forces are keeping a close watch on troop movements behind the Syrian and Egyptian lines.
Even before the negotiations broke down, Israeli military sources had expressed serious concern over the massive military build-ups by Egypt and Syria and the large-scale war exercises conducted by both countries just behind the cease-fire lines. The war atmosphere was increased by a statement by the Egyptian Chief of Staff yesterday that Egyptian forces must be prepared to complete the mission started on October 6, 1973–the day Egypt and Syria attacked Israel launching the Yom Kippur War. Defense Minister Shimon Peres said yesterday that there has been no general call-up of the reserves, although a few reservists may have been called for active duty.
