Israel Shemesh, 30, a member of the Israeli security services, was killed Friday in Gaza’s main street when a hand grenade thrown at his car hit it and exploded. An Army officer in the car with him was injured and hospitalized. The security services arrested a number of terrorists in connection with the attack. With the approach of spring, there have been signs of increased terrorist activity in the Gaza Strip despite Israel’s success in reducing the rate to almost nil. It was reported that a duplicating machine was stolen from a local office in Gaza, suggesting that terrorists intend to publish leaflets. It was also learned that some local merchants have been subjected to extortion demands, apparently to raise money for terrorist activities.
