A Ministerial committee established to deal with the proposed inclusion of a non-kosher kitchen on board the new Zim passenger liner, Shalom, today recommended to the Cabinet that the non-kosher facility be omitted from the vessel now being completed in a French shipyard. The Cabinet, however, deferred a final decision on the matter pending further hearings.
The issue was submitted to the Ministerial committee after the projected non-kosher kitchen, in addition to the regular kosher facilities on board the ship, aroused vehement criticism in Government and political circles. The committee, which was headed by Labor Minister Yigal Allon, of Achdut Avoda, also included Religious Affairs Minister Zerach Warhaftig of the National Religious Party, and Police Minister Behor Shitreet or Mapai. The latter two reportedly backed the committee’s recommendation.
Mr. Allon, who is believed to favor the inclusion of the non-kosher kitchen in the ship, reported to the Cabinet that officials of Zim claimed that the lack of such a facility would subject the line to a heavy loss.
