Israeli officials reacted with some interest to a Hamas statement that it would consider a temporary peace with Israel. Hamas leader Sheik Ahmed Yassin said Wednesday that Hamas would agree to a “temporary peace” in exchange for a Palestinian state in the pre-1967 borders, the evacuation of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and the resettling of millions of Palestinian refugees and their descendants in Israel.
