Israeli opposition leader Ariel Sharon called for the immediate redeployment of the Israeli army in the Jordan Valley and Israeli-controlled areas of the West Bank to “prevent any attempt by the Palestinian authority to take territory by force.” Speaking in Chicago at the General Assembly of Jewish federations, Sharon also criticized Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, without mentioning him by name, for asking President Clinton to bring about a “reduction” in the Palestinian violence, rather than a total “cessation.”
