The Herut, Mapam and Communist parties submitted today motions of non-confidence in the Government on the issue of relations with West Germany. Herut additionally protested the “failure” of the Government to enlist United States Government aid in its campaign to induce West Germany to withdraw scientists working on advanced weapons systems for the Nasser regime in Egypt.
The Communists based their motion on a charge that West German scientists were working in Israel on nuclear projects. The leftist Mapam based its motion on a news report quoting Myer Feldman, President Johnson’s special counsel and White House advisor on Jewish and Israeli matters, as stating that Israel had never asked for United States intervention with West Germany. The motions will come up for debate in Israel’s Parliament next Monday.
(In Washington, Mr. Feldman characterized as “nonsense” today the report, published in an Israeli newspaper, that he had made the statement. He said he had not made any such assertion as that attributed to him in the story.)
