The Israeli police today entered the headquarters here of the world Mizrachi central committee and confiscated all documents and accounts pertaining to Shlomo Rosenberg, Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, who is a Mizrachi leader.
Earlier this week Yedioth Achronoth, an evening newspaper, reported that Attorney General Chaim Cohen was drafting an indictment allegedly charging Mr. Rosenberg with contravening the currency regulations. In the Knesset yesterday, Mr. Rosenberg denied the charges published in the newspaper and demanded that either the Attorney General sue the newspaper or permit him to do so. He also offered to waive his personal immunity as a deputy in Parliament and stand trial on any charges the Attorney General may file. He later said that the charges were part of a political plot against him.
The Mizrachi central committee protested today’s police action to Premier Moshe Sharett. “Our accounts are not closed to anybody,” the protest said, “and if the police needed some documents connected with Mr. Rosenberg they could have obtained them by a written or oral approach. But the posting of guards and the confiscation of documents of our highest institutions and the moral offense of such an action is an unforgivable matter.”
