An Israeli border policeman was wounded by a sniper near the Old City this afternoon, touching off a police dragnet in which scores of persons were detained for questioning. The victim, not immediately identified, was hospitalized and reported to be resting comfortably.
The incident occurred just outside the Herod’s Gate, a busy commercial area of East Jerusalem frequented by Jews, Arabs and tourists. Four shots were fired from the top of the Old City wall at the policeman who was patrolling on foot. (By David Landau)
