Israeli President Ezer Weizman denied reports that he intends to step down in May at the end of seven years in the position, according to his office. Weizman, 76, has said he favors limiting presidential tenures to a single, seven-year term instead of two four-year terms. The Israeli daily Ha’aretz reported that Weizman had discussed the idea with Prime Minister Ehud Barak, and that former Prime Minister Shimon Peres is a candidate to succeed him.
