Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon approved a plan to increase security in Jerusalem. To prevent Palestinian terrorists from entering the city, the plan calls for construction of security walls, fences and ditches to separate outlying neighborhoods of the city from areas under Palestinian control.
