Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon met with settler leaders in an effort to reassure them that his government is fully aware of their security needs. Sharon told the group that the army had free rein to retaliate for Palestinian attacks, including seizing Palestinian territory and killing suspected militants in targeted operations. Settler leaders later described Sharon’s answers as unsatisfactory.
