Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in Washington carrying new ideas to break the impasse in the Middle East peace process, according to Israeli officials. U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, who met with the Israeli premier for 90 minutes, scheduled a second meeting with Netanyahu for Thursday. At issue in the talks is a firm U.S. demand that Israel turn over another 13 percent of West Bank land to the Palestinians. Netanyahu faces stiff opposition to the U.S. plan from members of his government, including Cabinet minister Ariel Sharon, who rejected an invitation to join Netanyahu in his meetings with Albright. But he also got a letter of support to sign a deal from 10 members of his coalition.
