Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said a unilateral declaration of statehood by the Palestinian Authority would cause a total collapse of the peace process. Netanyahu’s address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York came just a day after Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat reiterated that the Palestinians would, indeed, make such an announcement on May 4, 1999, after the end of the interim period spelled out under the Oslo accords.
