Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel and the Palestinians had been “very close” to completing negotiations on a further Israeli redeployment from the West Bank, but that the Palestinians had pulled back. But Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat denied Netanyahu’s claim. Netanyahu also urged Syrian President Hafez Assad and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to negotiate “with the one Israeli government which can deliver a peace that can be backed by the entire people of Israel.”
