Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to continue expanding existing Jewish settlements. “We are building and will continue to build,” he said after conferring city status on the West Bank settlement of Ariel, which, he added, would “be part of Israel in any final-status agreement in the future.” His comments came hours after U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright urged Israel and the Palestinian Authority to refrain from unilateral actions that might derail peace efforts.
