Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu won several key votes in his effort to pass the 1998 budget. The votes came after leaders of two smaller parties reportedly wrangled concessions from the premier. Several Israeli Cabinet members had urged the prime minister to call for early elections rather than capitulate to what they termed the “extortionist” demands of some parties.
