Israeli scientists have located the gene responsible for a genetic disease more prevalent among Ashkenazi Jews that causes mental and motor deficiencies, including blindness, muteness and the inability to walk. One out of every 100 Ashkenazi Jews carries mucolipidosis, and more than 80 percent of people afflicted with the disease worldwide are Ashkenazi Jews. Both parents must be carriers in order for the disease to be passed on.
