Israeli troops fighting in the Gaza Strip learned lessons from the Lebanon war, a senior Israeli lawmaker said. Tzachi Hanegbi, head of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, said Thursday that the planners of this week’s operation against Palestinian rocket crews in the Gaza town of Beit Hanoun made efforts to avoid sustaining casualties on the scale of the recent campaign against Hezbollah.

The governor of the Bank of Israel said foreign investors might be scared off by the abundance of financial scandals in the Jewish state. Stanley Fischer was quoted as saying in an interview Thursday that criminal investigations of alleged wrongdoing by Israeli public figures such as Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and President Moshe Katsav, and rumors of other probes, sent the wrong message to foreign financial markets.
