Israeli violinist Lydia Mordkovitch of Israel has provided the United Nations Special Committee Against Apartheid with a written pledge not to perform in South Africa until apartheid is abolished. Subsequently, Mordkovitch has been deleted from a registry of entertainers, actors and others who have performed in South Africa.
“I have been made aware of the fact that the Norwegian Council for Southern Africa has reported me to the United Nations Centre Against Apartheid’s register of entertainers, actors and others who have performed in South Africa,” said Mordkovitch in a letter to the UN committee.
“Since I in no manner wish my visit to South Africa to be seen as support to the apartheid state, I would like to hereby regret my appearances in South Africa in February 1982. Moreover, I have no desire to return to South Africa as long as apartheid exists in that country.” (By Kevin Freeman)
