Israeli fighter planes shot down a Soviet-built, Egyptian MIG-21 tonight after two of the MIGs penetrated into the Israeli-occupied Sinai Peninsula, and touched off a brief air clash.
The Israeli interceptors were sent up over Great Bitter Lake in the southern Suez Canal area when the MIGs were spotted. One MIG was hit and seen falling in flames. There were no signs of the pilot bailing out. The Israeli jets returned safely to base.
