A contract is expected to be signed here this week for the construction of two 250,000 deadweight ton supertankers for the Israeli shipping company, Meridon, Ltd. of Haifa. The vessels, which would rank among the largest ships afloat, will be built at the Verolme shipyards here.
(The Israel Government is considering the construction of a new oil refinery at Ashdod which would have an output of four to five million tons a year, about equal to Israel’s present internal consumption of oil. The plant would cost between $14 million and $24 million according to Deputy Finance Minister Zvi Dinstein. At the same time, the output of the Haifa oil refineries would be increased from five to six million tons a year thus giving Israel’s petrochemical industries a substantial surplus for export.)
