Israel’s chief rabbis withdrew their support of plans to dismantle the Religious Affairs Ministry. Chief Sephardic Rabbi Eliyahu Bakshi-Doron said the rabbis originally thought the plan was designed to improve the provision of religious services to local communities. But in light of a series of other secular reforms proposed by Prime Minister Ehud Barak, Bakshi-Doron said it now appears to the rabbis that the plan is politically motivated.
