Israel’s defense minister called on Moscow to help advance an Israeli initiative to withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon, a proposal that has been rejected by Syria and Lebanon. Yitzhak Mordechai raised the issue during talks in Israel with Russia’s visiting deputy foreign minister, Viktor Posuvalyuk. The Defense Ministry said Mordechai also asked Russia to convey to Damascus Israel’s interest in renewing peace negotiations.
