Israel’s defense minister described Hezbollah as an advance fighting force for Iran. “Hezbollah is Iran’s advance commando unit. In effect, it is the Iranian vanguard,” Amir Peretz said Wednesday in a televised address to Israeli troops. He suggested that the current round of fighting with the Lebanese militia, in response to its deadly July 12 border raid, served Israel’s strategic interests, given Iran’s nuclear program.
