The existence of Israel constitutes a “menace” to Egypt, the Egyptian Premier Gamal Abdel Nassar declared in a statement broadcast today over the Cairo radio. “Israel, which is armed by its friends and by those who created her, is a sword pointed at us, our freedom, and our dignity. It even menaces our land and people as it did Palestine and its people,” the Egyptian dictator said.
Reports reaching here today from Bagdad reveal that the Arab countries are in contact with each other on a plan to persuade Thailand to abandon its recognition of Israel. The Arab states may also ask the Indonesian Government to use its influence with Thailand for the same purpose, the reports indicate.
Agreement in principle was reached on July 9 between Egypt and Czechoslovakia to conclude a trade and payments agreement between the two countries during the week. According to the agreement the two countries will exchange goods worth seven million pounds sterling. Egypt will export to Czechoslovakia cotton and certain mineral raw materials and will import from it iron and certain machinery.
