Mrs. Golda Meir, Foreign Minister of Israel, started a round of conversations today with other foreign ministers and various delegations here. This morning Mrs. Meir saw Christian Pineau, Foreign Minister of France, and later conferred with Lester B. Pearson. Canada’s Minister for External Affairs. Mr. Pearson is the author of the General Assembly resolution which established the UN international police force.
Meanwhile, the spokesman for the French Foreign Ministry told correspondents here that Israel’s attack on Egypt was preceded by a “tremendous threat to try to wipe Israel off the map.” He said that “among the $50,000,000 worth of weapons captured by Israel there were some that were so deadly that experts still wonder what they could have been intended for. We are very much concerned as to what can happen there. It is fortunate that those unusual weapons are now in the hands of the Israelis.”
The French spokesman said that his government was greatly concerned about the threat of “volunteers” coming into the Middle East and hoped that the United Nations would find a way of halting the flow of “volunteers” into the Middle East. In answer to a question about the French Government’s viewpoint regarding Israel’s promise to withdraw its troops from Egyptian territory, the spokesman said that in the view of Paris there is no implication that Israel should withdraw its troops from the Gaza strip.
