Israel needs about 400,000 new housing units in the next decade, David Tanne, director of housing of the Israel Ministry of Labor, reported today to a meeting of the United Nations Economic Commission on Europe.
Mr. Tanne told the meeting that Israel has not yet been able to achieve the necessary construction level of 40,000 homes a year. In 1954, he reported, Israel built 20,000 housing units, and last year 25,000. He said that Israel planned to disperse its population throughout the country and offset the present “dangerous trend of congestion.”
