An underground plot to bomb for a second time the Russian Embassy in Tel Aviv, in the hope of provoking Russian military intervention leading to American counter-intervention in favor of Israel, was described in testimony in district court by the chief of the Israel intelligence service.
The intelligence official, whose name was withheld, testified in opposition to a plea for the release on bail of Yaacov Herouti, member of the “Sarafand,” an alias for the “Fighters for an Israeli Kingdom,” Herouti is charged with leadership of an unnamed underground group.
The intelligence chief said it would be dangerous to release Herouti even under constant police observation. He pointed out that Herouti would find ways of making contact with his followers many of whom “have not yet been arrested” for lack of evidence.
