Israel’s Knesset gave final approval to a bill to dissolve the Parliament and hold early elections on May 17. The bill passed a first vote two weeks ago after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged that his coalition was crumbling and agreed to dissolve his government. The Knesset also gave preliminary approval to a bill designed to make it harder for Israel to return the Golan Heights as part of a peace agreement with Syria. That bill, which still must pass two additional votes, calls in part for a national referendum on whether to cede the Golan to Syria.
