Israel’s Knesset is expected to vote next week on a bill that would block the appointment of Conservative and Reform representatives to local religious councils. Orthodox legislators are seeking the bill’s passage to bypass a recent Supreme Court ruling that non-Orthodox officials take their seats on the councils. The legislators have demanded passage of the bill as a condition for getting the nation’s 1999 budget legislation approved. Meanwhile, two non- Orthodox members of the Jerusalem religious council called on the high court to order the council to convene immediately.
