Israel’s Labor Party candidate for prime minister criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for making the release of Jonathan Pollard a campaign issue. “If Pollard is released, it won’t be as a result of the actions” of the Netanyahu government, “but in spite of the damaging measures of the government and its leader,” Ehud Barak told Israel Radio. His comments came after the premier criticized Barak for not signing a letter Netanyahu sent President Clinton requesting clemency for Pollard, who is serving a life sentence in North Carolina for spying for Israel.
