The demand for a special legal status in Israel for the Jewish Agency in all matters pertaining to the special tasks of the Zionist movement will be supported by the Mapai, Israel’s Labor Party, at the forthcoming World Zionist Congress, which will be held in Jerusalem this summer, it was announced here today at the concluding session of the Mapai’s national conference.
The conference adopted a resolution urging the establishment of a joint body composed of representatives of Israel and of the world Zionist movement for the purpose of outlining a sphere of activity for the latter. At the same time, the conference defined the functions of the world Zionist movement as follows: 1. To organize the Jewish people abroad for the support of Israel’s efforts to “gather in the exiles”, 2. To spread the Hebrew language and Jewish culture; 3. To train Jews abroad for emigration to Israel and to recruit- all forces possible for assistance in the work of mass migration of Jews to the Jewish state.
The Mapai delegates to the World Zionist Congress were instructed by the conference to strive for the establishment of a unified Zionist organization in all countries based on the principle of individual membership in both the party Zionist group and in the unified Zionist organization. Each unified national organization would, under the Mapai resolution, work within limits determined by the World Zionist Congress.
