Israel’s minister of absorption told American Jewish leaders that she is reluctant to support the speedy processing of thousands of Ethiopians who hope to come to Israel unless they promise $50 million for the project. Participants at a Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations meeting Wednesday with Yuli Tamir, however, said that until Israel decides who among the Falash Mura — descendants of Jews who converted to Christianity — are eligible to immigrate, they cannot mobilize a fund-raising campaign.
